Sayo was one of the orphans raised by the young monk Gyomei Himejima; she has no fighting ability, but her survival of the temple massacre that killed her foster siblings shapes her adult life and conscience.

Sayo has short black hair styled in a blunt bob with a fringe. In her childhood at the temple she wore a light-pink kimono patterned with delicate flowers, always going barefoot like the other orphans.

Selfless even as a small child, Sayo once gave up her own fish dinner to a hungry Gyomei out of concern for his gaunt frame. As an adult she carries deep regret, realizing her disjointed childhood testimony was partly responsible for Gyomei's wrongful arrest.
