A prodigy swordsman with an extraordinarily acute sense of smell, Tanjiro fights with Water Breathing before developing his family's ceremonial Hinokami Kagura dance into a devastating combat style, later revealed as a variant of the legendary Sun Breathing. He manifests the Demon Slayer Mark during the Swordsmith Village arc, dramatically boosting his speed and strength.

Tanjiro is a lean, athletic young man with tousled black hair fading to red at the tips and distinctive dark red eyes. A scar from a childhood accident marks his forehead, and he wears the standard black Demon Slayer uniform along with his family's checkered green-and-black haori.

Tanjiro is exceptionally kind and empathetic, showing compassion even toward the demons he is forced to kill, and he is driven above all by devotion to curing his sister Nezuko. His gentle nature is matched by iron determination and a keen, perceptive intellect that lets him read opponents and situations with unusual clarity.
