The Demon Slayer Corps maintains a formal ten-rank ladder — Mizunoto, Mizunoe, Kanoto, Kanoe, Tsuchinoto, Tsuchinoe, Hinoto, Hinoe, Kinoto, and Kinoe — before the sole elite designation of Hashira above them. Every Corps member enters at Mizunoto immediately after passing Final Selection, regardless of prior training.
Rank determines which missions a Demon Slayer is trusted to take alone and how much support they can call on from the organisation, from the Ubuyashiki family down to the Kakushi support staff who tend to the wounded and maintain the Corps' supply lines.
Climbing the Ladder
Promotion through the ten numbered ranks is earned through confirmed demon kills and mission performance, reviewed periodically by the Corps leadership. Tanjiro Kamado, Zenitsu Agatsuma, and Inosuke Hashibira all begin at Mizunoto immediately after Final Selection and rise through the ladder as the story progresses.
Most named Corps members shown in the anime who have not yet reached Hashira default to the entry rank of Mizunoto if their exact numbered rank is never stated on-screen — a reasonable assumption given how recently many of them joined relative to the story's active timeline.
Hashira — The Ceiling of the Ladder
Hashira sits above the ten-step ladder entirely rather than extending it. To qualify, a swordsman must either have slain at least fifty demons or a single Upper Moon. In practice, only a small handful of Demon Slayers hold the title at any given time, and the position carries real institutional power: Hashira sit on the Corps' inner council alongside Kagaya Ubuyashiki himself.
Some individuals, such as Yoriichi Tsugikuni and Sakonji Urokodaki, were offered the Hashira title in their era and declined it — a detail that says as much about their character as their strength.
Ranks in the KimetsuDle Games
In KimetsuDle, Rank is one of the tracked attributes, and the game uses the full ladder order — Civilian, Mizunoto through Kinoe, Demon, Lower Moon, Hashira, Upper Moon, Demon King — to generate the ↑/↓ arrows in Higher or Lower-style comparisons. A yellow tile on Rank means you are one or two steps away on that ladder, which is often enough to guess the general seniority of the secret character even before you know their name.
