Nezuko Kamado was turned into a demon during the massacre that killed most of her family, infected with Muzan Kibutsuji's blood in the attack that opens the entire story. Unlike demons who embrace their transformation, Nezuko never asked for this — and from the very first night, she does something no other known demon does: she refuses to attack her own brother, Tanjiro, even in a starved, half-feral state.
Resisting the Hunger for Human Blood
Ordinary demons are compelled to consume human flesh to sustain their strength. Nezuko instead trains herself, through years of forced sleep and sheer force of will, to survive without feeding on humans at all — a feat that both Sakonji Urokodaki and later Tamayo treat as nearly unprecedented. This restraint is the entire reason Tanjiro is able to bring her along rather than being forced to kill her outright.
The Sun and the Awakening
Most demons burn instantly in sunlight — the single trait Muzan has never been able to overcome even after a thousand years. Nezuko eventually develops a partial resistance to sunlight herself, an anomaly tied to her refusal to feed and to Tamayo's experimental medicine, and one of the clearest signs that she is not a demon in the ordinary sense.
During the Entertainment District arc, cornered and pushed past her limits fighting alongside Tanjiro and Inosuke against Daki, Nezuko undergoes a full Awakening: a dramatic size and power increase accompanied by a burst of fire-like demon energy, allowing her to fight on a scale far beyond her usual restrained state. It is one of the clearest "final form" moments the anime affords a demon character, and it plays a decisive role in turning the tide of that battle.
Why She Matters to the Story
Nezuko is the walking argument at the heart of Demon Slayer's themes: that a demon is not defined solely by what they were turned into, but by the choices they still make. Every Hashira who meets her is forced to reconsider the Corps' absolute rule that all demons must be destroyed — and by Infinity Castle Part 1, her survival and resistance to sunlight are treated as one of the few pieces of genuine hope in Muzan's war against the sun.
